The wardrobes in the White House send a message -- from Abigail Adams’ restrained New England style to Dolley Madison’s love of turbans; from Mary Todd Lincoln’s work with Elizabeth Keckley, a free Black dressmaker, to devotees of Parisian couture like Edith Wilson and proponents of “American Fashions for American Women” like Florence Harding; to style icon Jacklyn Kennedy to the climate conscious fashions of First Lady Dr. Jill Biden. First Ladies have used fashion in a plethora of ways -- employing “sartorial diplomacy,” making political statements, helping define their time in the White House, championing American products and makers, or crafting a specific image -- and these clothing choices were not made on a whim. Explore some of America's both best known and often overlooked First Ladies and their important contributions to fashion and politics in the United States. Led by Nora Ellen Carleson, an Associate Curator at Historic New England and active member in FLARE (First Ladies Association of Research and Education).
